Yongnuo is going after its own China based competition with its new pocket strobe, the YN200. Or, it’s going to have to be one killer lens. The portable strobe wars are not over yet. There’s no word on a price for the Yongnuo 25mm f/1.7M lens yet, but it’s going to have to be quite the bargain to draw customers away from the tried and tested currently-$150 Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 lens. It runs on 2.4GHz radio with 7 channels and 3 groups (A, B, C). It is based on a two-way transmitter-receiver that allows one camera to control multiple flashes at the same time. Perhaps they’re relying on updates through the camera for new firmware (and there is a list of what I’m guessing are compatible bodies for this purpose on the product page). Yongnuo, the manufacturer, describe the YN-622C system as high performance master and slave equipment for multiple flash photography. So tail sync will only work at all at full power, and even then they are much faster than the old style lights. Interestingly, there doesn’t seem to be any mention of a USB port for updating firmware, as there has been with many of Yongnuo’s clone lenses. Now these work like Speedlights and have a very brief flash duration at lower outputs as they have the ability to cut the light off dead rather than letting it tail off. The lens uses an STM stepper motor for focusing, and there’s an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens allowing you to quickly and easily switch to manual focus when required. 3 Groups ( A/B/C) Mix TTL, Remote Manual, and SuperSync Groups Syne mode ( 1st-curtain. It has a minimum focus distance of 20cm (a touch closer than Panasonic), with a more standard 52mm filter thread (the Panasonic is a slightly odd 46mm). For comparison, Panasonic’s 25mm f/1.7 is 8 elements in 7 groups and the Olympus 25mm f/1.8 is 9 elements in 7 groups. The lens appears to be of an original design, comprised of 7 elements in 6 groups. ![]()
